This involved five people who mysteriously disappeared from the hotel’s elevator when the building was struck by lightning. Meanwhile, fans of Johansson are likely thrilled to see the actress has lined up another project with Disney. ![]() However, it seems like the House of Mouse is back to bringing its iconic attractions to cinemas now that it has Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt's Jungle Cruise releasing in July 2021 and Johansson's Tower of Terror in the works. Disney had reportedly been developing a theatrical Tower of Terror film since 2015, which was originally going to be written by John August and had the cursed elevator transporting visitors through time.Ĭonsidering the financial and critical success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, at least initially, moviegoers may be surprised it has taken Disney this long to bring another of its classic rides to the big screen. Actress Kirsten Dunst and Steve Guttenberg starred in a made-for-television movie based on the ride in which they portrayed an uncle-niece duo who investigate the paranormal ongoings in the Hollywood Tower Hotel. Johansson's Tower of Terror project will not be the first time Disney has adapted the ride for the screen. Plot details on Disney's Tower of Terror film are not being divulged, though the narrative of the ride involves a fictional hotel where people have mysteriously disappeared from the aforementioned elevator in years past due to the machinations of a supernatural entity. A director has not been officially attached to the project at this time, though Collider sources say Disney plans to "aim high" considering Johansson's recent dual Oscar nominations for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, as well as her upcoming leading role in Black Widow. Filmmaker Josh Cooley, who previously helmed Pixar's Toy Story 4 and is set to direct an animated Transformers film, is currently penning the script for the Tower of Terror film. Additional versions of the attraction were later constructed at various Disney sites, all of which culminate with visitors being seated in an "elevator" that free falls. Inspired by Rod Sterling's original Twilight Zone series, the first Tower of Terror ride opened at Walt Disney World's then-named Disney-MGM Studios in 1994.
